Frequently asked questions.

  • The average retreat guest stays 3-9 nights. We have a two-night minimum stay (and a three-night minimum on holiday weekends). 85% of our retreat guests are solo travelers, so if you join us on your own, you’ll be in good company.

  • Most importantly, bring an internal commitment to yourself—to breathe deeply, to view the world with an open, curious mind, and to rejuvenate. For movement and meditation classes, we recommend free-flowing, comfortable attire; we provide all mats and props. For outdoor activities, prepare for Maine’s variable seasons with appropriate outerwear, including rain or snow gear, with plenty of layers. Even in the depths of summer, Maine can be cool at night. For outdoor activities, we recommend bringing a pair of comfortable day hikers (or, in winter, sturdy boots). Prepare for coziness. Feel free to bring bicycles, skis, or other outdoor equipment. Water bottle, sunscreen in all seasons, insect repellent, hat and gloves, and headlamp.

  • Bringing or renting a car is a great idea. While we’re only a short walk to the center of our village, we’re a 15-30 minute drive away from local trailheads, Sugarloaf, and other points of interest. There are no local buses or shuttle services available.

We have plenty of parking on site and would be glad to make recommendations about where to rent a vehicle.

For other transportation details, please visit our Getting Here page.

  • Of course! Tell us at least 48 hours in advance so we can allocate a dog-friendly room for you.

There is a charge of $50/stay.

We’re glad to provide a bed, bowls, and tasty treats for Fido. Please bring your own crate.

We have two free-range doodles on site (Pamplemousse and Winnie), so Fido should be comfortable around other dogs.

Due to allergies, unfortunately, we’re unable to welcome other pets, including cats.

In common areas and on the grounds, Fido must remain on a leash at all times.

Fido must be vaccinated with a standard series of vaccinations, including rabies, and must be spayed/neutered.

You are welcome to leave Fido in your room unattended, provided that he stays crated anytime you’re out of the room so our housekeeping and security staff can enter.

If Fido has a lot of feelings to talk about (we know how it goes in new spaces!), we’ll ask you to return to your room and collect Fido for the remainder of your stay.

  • No, absolutely not. We customize all of Santosha’s programming to meet your needs and experience level, with the intention of making all our sessions as approachable as possible.

And if you prefer not to participate in any daily activity, feel free to make your own plans. All parts of the daily itinerary are completely optional. Skip morning practice and sleep in! Head out for a day of hiking or antiquing! Snuggle up by the fire and read. Remember: this is your retreat, not ours.

Your experience at Santosha is entirely your own: we invite you to craft the most rejuvenating, mindful experience you can.

  • Yes! All classes and activities are designed to be accessible to yogis of all levels of experience.

We would be honored if you joined us to deepen your practice and explore your connection to yoga.

  • No, all yoga classes are included in your stay. The only exceptions are monthly events that are listed in our upcoming events.

  • Absolutely. We recognize that some folks find deeper focus in a solo practice. We’re glad to arrange for private instruction at the time of your booking. The value is $100 /60-minute session.

    Contact reservations@santosha.org with questions.

    Healing Arts are for everyone.

  • Yes, you can make reservations here.

  • Children are more than welcome at Hillholm. We ask only that children’s activities do not disrupt the peaceful environment of mindfulness for others in our space.

If you will need a crib or highchair, please advise us in advance so we can make appropriate arrangements.

  • We have intentionally omitted most technology and appliances in the guest rooms to create a more peaceful, quiet space that is also energy-conscious. Our guest rooms do not contain televisions, telephones, refrigerators, microwaves, coffee makers, kettles, or alarm clocks. A wall clock hangs in each guest room. Each bathroom is equipped with a hairdryer. An iron and ironing board are available as needed.

Coffee and tea are served in the Lounge beginning at 7:30 a.m. We are glad to provide an ice bucket and ice as needed.

Refrigerator and freezer space are available by asking our kitchen staff.

If you plan to watch media or listen to music on your tablet or mobile phone, we request that you please wear headphones, even in your guest room.

In lieu of electronic devices, we happily offer board games, books, and otherwise. We like to take life a little slower here.

On-site laundry service is available for guests for a fee. Self-service washers and dryers are available at a local laundromat.

  • At Hillholm, we have speedy WiFi, stable cell phone signals, and a landline at the office.

We understand that you may want a break from technology entirely. We will gladly hold cell phones, tablets, or laptops in a designated area if you’d like to #takeabreak.

  • Your retreat includes four daily meals—First Breakfast (7:30 a.m.), Brunch (11:00 a.m.), Lunch (2:00 p.m.), and Dinner (7:00 p.m.)

Coffee and tea are included in your comprehensive fee; cocktails, mocktails, beer, and wine are charged separately.

  • Smoking is prohibited at Hillholm, both in guest rooms and common spaces, and outdoors within 100 feet of all structures.

    This prohibition includes vaping devices.

We can direct smokers to appropriate off-site locations for smoking adjacent to our property.

In the event we find evidence that you have been smoking on the premises, we will charge a flat $1,000 fee to your account, in accordance with our terms and conditions.

Let’s keep a healthy environment for everyone.

  • Yes, we certainly do. Please contact us at reservations@santosha.org to purchase one.

In the event you purchased a gift certificate from the prior owners of the Inn on Winter’s Hill, we honored those gift certificates for one year following the change in ownership, ending in May 2023. We no longer honor gift certificates issued by any prior owners prior to May 2022.

  • For our retreat guests:

We know life gets in your way sometimes. While we do not provide refunds under any circumstances, we will gladly work with you to reschedule your retreat within six (6) months of your original dates, free of charge, provided that your original invoice has been paid in full. After rescheduling once, any subsequent rescheduling may not be permitted and will incur a fee. And we don’t offer rescheduling on account of adverse weather events like snow or rain: living in the mountains, weather events are part of daily life for us.

For our Just a Room guests (hotel lodging only): the cancellation fee applicable to your reservation is listed in your confirmation details.

For the avoidance of doubt, we do not provide refunds even if you are prevented from traveling to Santosha due to illness; travel logistics or cancellations; weather events; family events; changes in plans; or otherwise. We believe that, if you make a retreat reservation, you intend to join us, one way or another.

  • Hillholm, as this estate was named by its original owner, Amos G. Winter, served as a beloved inn for fifty years, most recently called The Inn on Winter’s Hill. The inn is a perennial favorite for alpine tourists every winter; many families made timeless memories here. In 2022, we purchased Hillholm and committed to maintain some inn operations, to remain a resource to the public and those who loved the inn in its prior incarnations.

If you’re looking for Inn Lodging, not a yoga retreat, please read about what’s included in your stay here.
