Yoga as Freedom: Exploring Independence to Design Your Life

If you find yourself asking big questions, like “what is my purpose?” or “why do I feel stuck?” or “how do I find contentment?”, this retreat is for you. Whether you know or it or not, yoga practice is rooted in the ultimate quest for independence. Ancient yogis—meditators—sought freedom from the suffering nature of their minds by practicing yoga, studying foundational texts, and embracing the simplicity of monastic life. But short of running away to a mountain cave and meditating for eternity, we feel like freedom from our own ruminating minds is beyond our reach amidst our modern, complicated lives.

Independence Day in the United States offers us an opportunity to explore freedom during Maine’s high summer beauty. Over the course of the holiday weekend, we will study concepts from those same foundational texts that the ancient yogis studied. We will explore freedom in many forms—freedom of body, mind, agency, opinion, finances, and more. As we explore these themes, we will discuss a central question: How do I design a life that feels like me? While we do, we will delight in the simple pleasures of summer in Maine. Cold plunges in the local swimming hole at our back door. Hiking up to the Maine Huts and Trails lodges. Storytelling and s’mores by the fire. Craft brew tastings (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options). Local fireworks, of course.

Mindful Manhood: Learning How to Stretch (Ourselves)

Join Matt O’Donnell and Kevin Feeley (LCSW) for a meaningful weekend of yoga, mindfulness, and connection for men. Men can attest to myriad ways that society challenges their self-actualization with contradictory demands. Jumping from one standard of perfection to another can take precedence over men intentionally crafting the selves they intuitively desire. Studying yoga philosophy with like-minded men can help you remember parts of your identity that make you whole.

Come find camaraderie in retreat. Whether you are entirely new to yoga or not, you will find new ways to relate to the various facets of your inner life. She has been a commentator for National Public Radio’s All Things Considered and was a visiting writer at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. Nancy wrote a monthly column in McCall’s magazine and was the recipient of the Eye of The Beholder Artist in Residence Award at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. She was recognized for excellence in teaching with Robert Coles at Harvard University. She is the founder of The Chilmark Writing Workshop on Martha’s Vineyard and teaches her Jump-Start Your Memoir; Write It From The Heart program at Esalen, Kripalu, Omega Institute, and Blue Spirit in Costa Rica. Hillholm Writing Residency (2023 Cohort I)

In collaboration with From The Fishouse, the Hillholm Writing Residency supports emerging writers by providing nurturing time and space to dedicate to their craft. For a two-week period, a cohort of writers enters retreat at Hillholm Estate to work intensively and connect with like-minded artists.

Residency applications are due April 28, 2023 for this cohort. Consistent with the enduring Fishouse philosophy to support emerging writers, Hillholm prioritizes awards to applicants with two or fewer published books of writing, at any stage in their careers. Unlike prior offerings from the Fishouse, Hillholm accepts writers of any written medium, not just poetry.

Join your Valentines and Galentines for an exploration of the Divine Feminine and the meaning of love with Santosha on the Carrabassett. Take a deep dive with us into the yoga of love—bhakti—and its representations throughout yoga philosophy. This long weekend includes a meaningful cacao ceremony to cultivate lovingkindness; an elegant wine (and mocktail) tasting; a cocktail and mocktail-making class; yoga asana practices dedicated to each of the Hindu goddesses we study; and dharma discussions about those goddesses’ myths and teachings.

For the avoidance of doubt, this is not a couples’ retreat (although couples are more than welcome!) And it’s not a retreat providing any faith-based instruction. We’re simply using the archetypes of Hindu goddesses to learn more about ourselves and the world around us.

Live Kirtan Sessions and Yoga Flows

If you’re new to Kirtan, the melodic chanting experience of yoga, this retreat offers a wonderful welcome into a meaningful, timeless practice. Join yogini Marni Prince along with Todd Glacy, Helena Nash, and Jason Prince in the healing power of community Kirtan. Kirtan is an ancient form of Bhakti, also known as the Yoga of Song. Sing mantras accompanied by live instruments in a call-and-response format to immerse yourself in the universal energy of sound. All are welcome to sing along, or just listen and enjoy the music. No prior experience with Kirtan or yoga asana is necessary to participate fully.

Begin Friday evening with nourishing Restorative yoga and a Kirtan concert. Wake up Saturday morning to flowing Hatha yoga accompanied by live music. Spend an afternoon skiing or curled up by the fireplace with a good book. Gather again on Saturday evening for a festive final concert. Depart Sunday feeling rejuvenated and more connected to your yoga and community.
